The dream of being special is the dream of hell

Before the beginning, there was neither start nor end—only the eternal now, present always and forever.

In this state, there was only perfect Unity. This unity was so complete, so limitless in its joyful extension, that it was impossible to be aware of anything outside of itself.

This is what we call non-duality, the one and only immortal reality, known as "Heaven."

The fall into the dream of separation seemingly occurred when a tiny “part” of the One had a crazy idea and asked the Infinite Creator for something that could not be granted: “I wish to be special.”

To ask perfect Unity to be special—to be loved and recognized in a unique way, rather than as Total and infinite—was an impossible request. God made us exactly like Himself, without difference, complete and whole. Non-separated, and One.

When this request could not be granted, the child misunderstood, believing his Father didn’t love him enough to grant his wish to be special.

So, he chose to create his own concept of specialness, against the Divine will, and thus his own universe was born—a realm of particularities, differences, and multiplicity (duality).

The Only Child of God created an image of specialness of himself:

The hero of the dream is the body!

Reflect on the dream of human life, the world (maya), and you’ll see it is driven by the desire to be special, to be uniquely loved.

The physical body, like the visible part of an iceberg, and the soul, the hidden part, are both reflections of the thought of separation and specialness, the root cause of suffering.

Birth into a special body is suffering (babies aren’t born smiling). Life as a separate body is suffering, as the child seeks attention from specific people, wanting to be loved more than others.

As adults, we pursue particular love and recognition in relationships, work, and society, all to be loved as special.

And since every individual seeks the same, it becomes a war against Love (Unity/non-duality), striving to surpass others to fulfill the desire for self-importance.

This desire manifests in wanting to be noticed, to shine, to be more than others—or even to appear as a victim or martyr, attracting pity and seeking particular love. These are two faces of ego’s duality.

Look around at the world!

Look within your subconscious and observe the ego. The suffering in human life stems from the demand to be special in the eyes of a character within the dream, or in the world of particularity at large.

In A Course in Miracles, J. tells us:

“When you unite with me you are uniting without the ego, because I have renounced the ego in myself and therefore cannot unite with yours. Our union is therefore the way to renounce the ego in you. The truth in both of us is beyond the ego. Our success in transcending the ego is guaranteed by God, and I share this confidence for both of us and all of us. I bring God’s peace back to all His children because I received it of Him for us all. Nothing can prevail against our united wills because nothing can prevail against God.”

(ACIM, T-8.V.4:1-6)

And again:

“Awe should be reserved for revelation, to which it is perfectly and correctly applicable. It is not appropriate for miracles because a state of awe is worshipful, implying that one of a lesser order stands before his Creator. You are a perfect creation and should experience awe only in the Presence of the Creator of perfection. The miracle is therefore a sign of love among equals. Equals should not be in awe of one another because awe implies inequality. It is therefore an inappropriate reaction to me. An elder brother is entitled to respect for his greater experience and obedience for his greater wisdom. He is also entitled to love because he is a brother, and to devotion if he is devoted. It is only my devotion that entitles me to yours. There is nothing about me that you cannot attain. I have nothing that does not come from God. The difference between us now is that I have nothing else. This leaves me in a state which is only potential in you.”

(ACIM, T-1.II.3:1-13)

The one who has renounced the ego has no need, and as J. says again in ACIM: “The one who needs nothing is worthy of all confidence.” For this is Christ.

This is who you are in Truth, and who you become when you renounce all forms of specialness.

He who has renounced this sees in all others the same Truth. This is true Love—without the need for admiration, pity, or anything special.

Understanding what seemed to happen in the dream, and then renouncing it, is the way to undo the illusion and be free.

Renounce your wish to be special, and let the Truth reveal itself to you:

With love,
